Mode S Elementary Surveillance

Rockwell Collins is pleased to offer a complete line of equipment and service bulletins to meet the new Mode S Elementary Surveillance functionality required for future operation in Europe. As a part of the long-range plan to improve airspace capacity, safety and efficiency, Europe has mandated the carriage and operation of Mode S transponders with specific baseline functionality effective March 31, 2003. This basic functionality includes:

  • 24-bit ICAO aircraft address.
  • Transponder capability report including SI code capability.
  • Altitude reporting.
  • Automatic reporting of aircraft identification (Flight ID).
  • Flight status (airborne/on the ground).

In support of these new requirements, the Rockwell Collins TDR-94/94D Mode S Transponder, RTU-870/4000/4200 and CDU-3000/5200/6200 will be available with the Mode S Elementary Surveillance feature in July 2002. Service bulletins will also be available to add this new feature to existing units.

In addition to the Mode S Transponder, the CTL-92E Transponder Control has been developed for non-integrated applications. The CTL-92E is designed to be a drop-in replacement for the CTL-92 with minor wiring changes required.

The Mode S Elementary Surveillance includes an eight-character aircraft identification parameter corresponding to that used in radio voice communications with air traffic services. This eight-character aircraft identification parameter, or Flight ID, is entered by a control device such as a radio tuning unit (RTU), control display unit (CDU) or dedicated transponder control unit.
